As I embark on this ‘biking to conferences’ malarkey, I’ve been asked some important questions. These are answered below. If you have any other curly questions, please let me know here.

What’s your fee?

NZD$9,000+GST. No hidden costs. I’ll invoice this the month of your event. My full T&Cs are here.

What do we actually pay for?

From my perspective, I’ll invoice you for my fee plus any reasonable travel expenses discussed and agreed prior to your event. This might include one night’s accommodation and a meal on the evening before the event. It may also include a fully flexible flight back to Dunedin if I’m not riding home due to family/other work commitments. You do not pay for the days I’m on my bike.

Most importantly, from your perspective you’ll receive a far better, deeper, richer speaker experience. I’ve done the usual ‘fly in, ra-ra, fly out’ speaker process for over a decade. I get that some of us speakers can be a pain in the arse and you may prefer minimal contact. However, I’m proud of my reputation as an easy-to-deal-with, helpful speaker. My priority is adding huge value to your event – it’s your ‘baby’ so I want to help you make it AMAZING! So, that better, deeper, richer experience includes me helping you market and promote the event AND build a sense of anticipation and excitement as I post vlogs/videos of my packing for, setting off and periodic updates of my progress, which is included in my speaker fee. I believe this is invaluable – it connects you, me and our audience before anyone gets in the room – and it’s yours to use as you feel free as well. I reckon that’s cool!

Doesn’t this approach mean you earn less than other Speakers who do multiple events each week?

Sure does, but that’s the price I pay for living my life by design. Personally, I reckon I’m better-off doing what I love and showing that to your clients/audiences.

What are the risks to us for your safety in those days you’re riding to our event?

None. I’m an independent contractor and not an employee of yours. I am choosing to travel to your event this way. If I chose to drive or fly and an accident happened (such as the plane crashed) I wouldn’t hold you liable or responsible for that accident either. Also, while I like a damn good adventure, I’m not a nutter nor am I unreasonable – I love living and plan to take all reasonable safety precautions. Not only do I plan to get to your event (and have a blast there!), I also plan to get home safely and even a wee bit fitter than when I left!

Do we get copies of the video footage to use?

Yes, you can keep the footage I post on social media and that which I use in my presentation, but not everything I record. I retain all copywrite and ownership of all footage I record and retain unrestricted rights to use this for my own purposes (such as promotion, presentations and boring my family at random gatherings) from the date of filming onwards.

Can you guarantee you’ll arrive on time?

Yes, this is part of the deal. While I may well make it look like I’m arriving just as your MC introduces and calls me up on stage (if that’s what we agree and plan), in fact I’ll arrive the night before. This allows time for me to edit footage and finalise my presentation, etc. It also means I’ll have had a shower, so I’ll be fresh, clean and smelling my best on stage. We’ll all appreciate this.

You’re in Dunedin but our conference is in Auckland. How will that work?

Good question. I like to have 2-3 days biking footage to make it worthwhile. I’m used to packing-down and reassembling my bike for flights so regardless of where your event is I would fly to a city that’s within a 200-300km radius of your event and ride from there. All that would be transparent and makes for great footage of the adventure!

By ‘Camping’ do you mean illegally squatting?

Haha, no nothing that exciting! I mean I like to camp in my 1-person tent. I’ll stay at campgrounds at my own expense and if the weather is particularly shite I may stay in a motel or hotel along the way – again at my own expense.

Do you have a bio and preferred introduction process?

Sure do. I’ll provide you a short script to be read out. However, what’s different about my introduction is I’ll create a short video clip of me biking to your event that can be played as I’m ‘arriving’. This will include some experiences/locations delegates may recognise along the way and (important to me and my message) some bloopers (which I may or may not ham up a little). This will be edited and sent to you the night prior or morning of the event with plenty of time for your AV people to cue it up ready for my keynote slot.
